4NCL Online League – Season 11 – Wessex squad Round 2 report

With Round 2, played on Tuesday 4th February the divisions started to take shape, with some early indications of where the promotion / relegation battles will be – see below

At an individual level, we scored 18 wins, 6 draws and just 8 losses which we converted to 7 match wins and 1 match loss – almost certainly our best ever performance as I’m sure I’d remember an evening when all 8 teams won !

A few logistics problems failed to dampen an astonishingly successful evening….

  • One game played with wrong colours so technically scored 0-0
  • one game played unrated – another technical 0-0
  • 3 defaults against our H team (I’ve sent a complaint email to the opposing captain for not giving us any warning whatsoever)

Division 1

Wessex A were slight favourites and faced strong resistance from a tough Oxford 1 team before wins from David & Jaimie plus a solid draw with black from Gavin saw us edge it 2.5 – 1.5.

With 4/4 points Wessex A now lead their Div 1 section.

Wessex B faced a very strong Salopians & Friends team and were outgraded on all 4 boards – unfortunately one of the Salopians friends was Keith Arkell, GM, on board ! John W notched up an excellent win which unfortunately didn’t count as it was played as “unrated” whilst Richard drew. Peter & Anuhas fought hard and eventually succumbed to their higher graded opponents.

With 0/4 Wessex B are in 8th place from 8 and face a tough struggle to stay up.

Division 2

Wessex C had a reasonably balanced match grade-wise and a win from Ted plus 3 draws from Roger, Jamie & Hugo saw us home with a 2.5 – 1.5 win.

With 2/4 Wessex C are in 5th place so mid-table.

Division 3

Wessex D took on Cozy Tomatoes who fielded the highest rated Div 3 player on board 1- Bill fought long and hard before losing to a very strong player. Wins from Jamie, Robert and Tim saw us win the match comfortably 3-1 overall. With 2/4 Wessex D are in 5th place i.e. mid-table.

Wessex E faced a tight match and prevailed 2.5 – 1.5 with wins from Robert & Doug plus a draw from Ed. Phil drew the “short straw” of a very strong board 1 opponent who played with a Shredder accuracy of 97% – the same as our Div 1 / Board 1 game!

With 3 points from 4 Wessex E are currently 2nd with a shot at promotion.

Division 4

Our F team were slightly out graded overall but had a great evening and won 3-1 with wins from Stephen, Liam & Phil. Thomas lost to yet another top board strong player who notched up a 91% accuracy score on Shredder. Phil’s game was with wrong colour so got a 0-0 score technically. With 4 points from 4 Wessex F are equal 1st in their section.

Division 5

Wessex G were slight favourites and duly won with solid wins from Ashraf, Steven & Michal.

With 3 points from 4 Wessex G sit in 5th place (of 25 teams)

Wessex H had a non-event evening when our opponents, with zero warning, defaulted on 3 boards with only Tim getting to play on board 1, against yet another strong board 1 player (despite a deceptively low grade). With 2 points from 4 Wessex H are in 14th place from 25 teams.

So, an incredible evening of results overall, with Wins for Wessex A, C , D, E, F, G, H and a loss for Wessex B (v a team that had a 2500 GM On board 1)

Stats-time

With 2 rounds completed we still have 5 players on 100% with 2/2

  • Michal Orszulak, Doug Blythe, Phil Stevens, Liam Rowe, David Pye

26 players have played in both rounds

Jamie Chilton won the “biggest upset” award this round with his win, beating a player graded 42 points above him.
