12 Clubs and 2 Leagues

There are 12 clubs and 2 main leagues – the Dorset County and the Bournemouth & District. Some clubs like Poole, Southbourne & Wimborne play in both; Ringwood to the east feature in the Southampton League, as well as the Bournemouth & District. Clubs typically have several teams of different strengths. For example, Poole and Wimborne have 7 & 10 teams respectively. Dorchester have 4 teams in the County League. Weymouth are the current County League champions.

All the clubs warmly welcome new members, of every standard from beginners. Chess in the county is played competitively, but clubs are also sociable. Like other counties, Dorset has some very strong players, some of whom regularly play for Wessex in the 4NCL national club competition.

If you are thinking of playing chess in Dorset for the first time you are assured of a very warm welcome. As already mentioned, you will feel immediately at home whatever your standard or experience.
