6 Oct: Michael’s son Rupert has let Martin Simons know that the service to commemorate Michael’s life and passing will be held at Weymouth Crematorium, Quibo Lane, Weymouth on Tuesday, 15 October at 2.30pm. Rupert has added that “…anyone linked to Martin, through the chess world”, is welcome to attend the service, but the family ask that “out of respect to Michael no formal attire please. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Research UK”.
Rupert has also been sending out invitations to attend the wake afterwards at The Wishing Well, Church Street, Upwey.
Any queries regarding the arrangements, from a Dorset Chess perspective, should be made to Martin please.
And here below is yesterday’s website post when Michael’s passing was made known.
5 Oct ’19: Martin Simons and Allan Pleasants report the sad news Mike Kaye passed away on 27 September ’19. Mike gave up chess some years ago, but represented both Dorchester and Weymouth in matches and was a competent player.
Martin has been in contact with his son Rupert who has given more information as below.
“My father died at the ripe old age of 84.9! He was just a month off 85, so had a good innings.
He died quickly and peacefully in Dorchester Hospital with his wife by his side. Not only did he play chess from a young boy, but he used it in life with thinking and planning. He was always a few moves ahead! He had begun to pass the skill on to his grandsons, who will miss trying to beat him. His clock ran out and he will be missed by many”.
