New Milton B 1.5 Ringwood B 2.5, B&DCL Div 3; Close match sees Ringwood reach safety but “phew”!
29 Apr. This was a key match in the brave bid by both teams to stay in Div 3. New Milton B had been on a good run, but fell just short to a higher graded Ringwood team. But after 2 games New Milton were leading 1.5-0.5 thanks to a Simon Bown win on board 2 and there was mounting tension, as so much depended on the final 2 games.
Malcolm Day, Ringwood’s Captain, seemingly stressed from a very tense finish to the evening, sent this report picking up at the halfway point with New Milton leading:
“On board 1, Pete Donaldson (Ringwood) had won the exchange for a pawn, but Stephen Disney had a very strongly placed knight to compensate, but got into time trouble, which eventually cost him the game – so now level.
In the meantime on board 3, Alan Wyke’s (Ringwood) game saw him attacking & meeting stout resistance from New Milton’s Mihail Puiu Nutu, making his first appearance for New Milton, until they were both up against the clock. Alan was especially cool under pressure and kept his head to execute a clever checkmate, while appearing to be in danger of conceding a draw by perpetual check, so that gave us the match – and some of us stomach ulcers…..Phew!!”
Very well done to a battling Ringwood B to have won and now stay up. But special mention also to New Milton B who had come up as Div 4 champions and have competed well in all their matches so far, despite being out graded most of the time.
New Milton B need to beat Highcliffe B in their final match, but are depending on other results going their way in order to stay in Div 3 for next season.
