Dorchester Jamboree – Thursday 22nd September

Chess League advice and information

Mark Potter (Dorchester) reports that the traditional Dorchester Jamboree will take place at the Colliton Club, Dorchester on Thursday 22nd September. Entries so far have been received from Dorchester, Weymouth, Highcliffe, Poole, Yeovil chess clubs. It is hoped that Ringwood and Wimborne will also enter.

The start time is 7.30pm and the time control for the upper boards is to be 1 hour with 30 second increments. Depending on the number of digital clocks available, the lower boards may have to be 1 hour 15 minutes for 35 moves and then a 15 minutes guillotine finish.

The inaugural tournament, to celebrate the start of the club’s 25th season, organised by Geoff Searing, was held in 2007. It invited other chess clubs in Dorset and Yeovil Chess Club, its close neighbour. Previously, there had been an annual match between Dorchester, Yeovil and Wimborne. An excellent playing format was devised for the Jamboree with each player within club teams able to play one player from another club. Yeovil were the worthy winners in the first year in a close finish and the exciting event was fully reported in the Dorset Echo.

This 1st event proved so enjoyable with so many positive comments that it has now become a permanent, popular annual fixture every September to act as an exciting curtain raiser for each new season. 8 clubs (Wimborne three times, Dorchester, Weymouth, Yeovil each twice, and Ringwood, Bridport, Purbeck, Poole each once) have won the tournament in its 15 year successful history. The last few years have attracted 42 players (7 teams) which is probably the club venue’s maximum capacity. This is the first time the event will be held since Covid.
