Analysis by Alan Dommett on games from the 52nd Dorset Open: 13-15 Oct ’17

Gabor Horvath played some outstanding chess to retain the 2017 Dorset Open Championship and was again unbeaten. In round 4, the key and decisive game was his win against IM Alan Merry and this is the first game analysed by Alan and appears immediately below. At the time of these notes (19 Nov ’17) there are 6 games.

Gabor who is unassigned to any local club enjoys coaching students of the game. He has coached in both Brazil and Ireland and does devote time to supporting junior chess in the area. He has coached at the Bournemouth Library sessions with Eric Sachs and the team, and has taken to individually teaching one or two of the most promising juniors developing their chess.

Alan’s second game is between two Michaels – Duggan and Fernandez. This win by Michael Fernandez, graded 216, effectively secured him 3rd place

The next 2 games are also from Round 3. Bill Adaway plays black against Peter Andersen (Leeds), Queen’s Gambit Declined. And then Martin Simons is white versus Mark Potter (Dorchester) in a Pirc Defence, Classical System

After losing to Gabor Horvath in Round 4, IM Alan Merry went on to win in the final round against P W Anderson and secure 2nd place in the Open Championship. Here he makes a sacrifice of what Alan describes as “real IM quality” and “a game fit to win any tournament” (except, of course, that chance went with the 4th round loss to Gabor)
