Wimborne 3.5 Purbeck 2.5, B&DCL Handicap KO Cup; Thrilling finish to a close match
28 Feb. Report below and result from Wimborne’s Colin Wilson (Many apologies to Peter Wilcock for wrongly saying Colin is the Captain in earlier report!). Wimborne were the higher graded team and so needed to win 3.5-2.5. All credit to both teams. Wimborne join Dorchester, Poole and Southbourne in the next round
What a terrific match, played in an excellent spirit, that went right down to the wire! Purbeck had made early inroads on boards 4 and 5, with splendid wins against the grading for Derek Mount and Jeremy Beling. Sepp Wikramaratna-Clarke had initially got Wimborne off to a bright start on the bottom board. A tight draw ensued between Pete Wilcock and John Coles on Board 2 which meant Wimborne had to win both the two remaining games to prevail overall. With tension mounting and spectators gathering, Jørgen Holmstrøm Nielsen achieved a crucial win in a frenetic and exciting finish on Board 3, before Mark Littleton saw Wimborne safely through to the next round with a narrow success on the top board, where clocks were also ticking down.
Much credit goes to the Purbeck players for putting up stout resistance throughout; they came within a whisker of gaining the tantalising extra half point they required to turn the result in their favour.
