Allan Pleasants and John Weatherlake At The European Team Championships

As previously reported, Allan Pleasants and John Weatherlake represented Wales at the European Team championships last week.  Before play had even commenced Allan said it was “Going to be tough for both of us”.

John Weatherlake (Poole Chess Club)

So it proved for John (pictured above) who played in four rounds, facing a GM, an IM, an FM and a WIM with an average rating of 2300. He played his usual enterprising chess but came away with no points, just as the vast majority of us would have done. However, it must have been a great experience for him.

Allan (pictured top) also faced tough opposition. He played in 7 rounds on board 2, and faced a GM, 2 IMs, 3 FMs, and a CM with an average rating of 2374. He was obviously on very good form as he claimed a win and three draws against this tough opposition, giving an impressive performance rating of 2272.

We hope to bring you a few games from the event in due course.

Wales finished last, propping up Scotland and Ireland just above them.  England, who were seeded fifth, finished 13th, despite a fine performance by Gawain Jones who was undefeated and scored 5.5/7 .
