Some players are asking if there are any local Covid restrictions or guidance in place and what to do regarding chess matches if a player or a player’s close family catches Covid.  Whilst UK Government restrictions have been removed both the DCCA and B&DCL continue to follow the government’s guidance. Accordingly…

Steps that we can all take to reduce the risk of catching and spreading COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated.  The over 50s have just been invited for their 4th vaccination.
  • Let fresh air in at our chess clubs.
  • Practise good hygiene, wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes, clean your surroundings frequently.
  • Consider wearing a face covering in crowded, enclosed spaces, especially if coming into close contact with vulnerable people who are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell from COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses or if COVID-19 rates are high.

If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to carry out your normal activities, you are advised to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.

If a member of your family or a close contact has COVID-19, you should consider taking a COVID-19 test on the day of your chess match to reduce the chances of spreading COVID-19. This is particularly relevant when there might be vulnerable players at your chess matches. If you test positive, we recommend you should not play. If you are negative, then perhaps you should consider wearing a face covering just to be safe. Please advise your team captain in advance so that a reserve can be ready to stand in at late notice.
