3rd Dorset Closed 2022 Report and Photos

Ian Clark has sent the following report on the 3rd Dorset Closed held on 19th June 2022

The tournament was held at the Elstead Hotel with 25 players in total.

The tournament was controlled by Steve Peirson and Martin Simons after I decided to play in Championship section due to a late withdrawal.

Championship

The first round saw hard fought matches with wins for top 2 rated players Allan Pleasants and Bruce Jenks together with Ian. In the second round Allan won comfortably and Bruce won a long match to put them a point ahead.

The third round saw Allan and Bruce fight out a draw leaving them clear on 2.5. In the last round Allan won a good game against Christian Westrap and Bruce won an exciting game against Ian after sacrificing Queen for rook and bishop in a very unclear game. These results meant Allan and Bruce (pictured top) sharing the championship trophy with Mark Littleton third on 2.5.

Major

The Major section was combined with the Intermediate as only 2 players were under 1700!

Ted Paul scorched out of the traps winning his first 3 matches. Femi Oloyede drew his first match but won his next 2 setting up a final winner takes all match with Ted. Femi (pictured below) took the honours winning the final game and the splendid trophy. Ted was second and Jamie Doyle and Tim Jones were third.

Minor

The Minor tournament was between the experienced Wimborne players and the younger players.

Florence Spirling started well with a win against Dan Ursell and then beat Finn Schell in the match between the juniors. Florence won her 3rd round but could not quite finish off in last round leaving chances for Finn and Dan to catch her which they did, resulting in a 3 way tie on 3 points for the Minor trophy. Dan, Finn and Florence are pictured below with the trophy.
