Dorset Junior Chess – recent March online Chess events

The last two Friday’s in the run up to the Easter holidays have seen two further fun flagship Dorset Junior Chess Friday evenings online chess coaching and tournament albeit with slightly fewer juniors following the return to school.  This regular Friday evening event continues to be a highlight of the week for many of the juniors.

Coaching

We continue to run online coaching in two virtual rooms to cater for all levels and abilities, the Rookies and the Improvers.

Over the past two weeks, in one virtual room, the keen Rookies studied counting pieces and double attacks using a Chesskid.com video and some chess exercises. They learnt the very important rule that if there are more attackers than defenders, it’s often a good idea to make a capture. But if there are less attackers, it’s not a good idea!

In the other virtual room, the Improvers were provided with a coaching session on ‘Opening Traps’ as well as a Chesskid.com video.

Tournaments

After the coaching sessions, there were the popular Friday evening tournament to round off each enjoyable evening. Results were:

    • Friday 19th March: Jack & Matthew came equal 1st, and Florence, Jake, Lohit, William, Harry & Raphael came equal 3rd.
    • Friday 26th March: Florence came 1st, Jack was 2nd and Raphael, Matthew & William came equal 3rd

Well played all juniors. Whilst the tournaments are being played many of the juniors continue to chat to each other so it is great to see them enjoying themselves.

Easter break

The Friday evening sessions will take a one week break on Friday 2nd April as it is Good Friday. But we will be back the following Friday (9th April) with a fun tournament and the Friday thereafter with our combined coaching and tournament evenings.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Easter holiday weekend.
