Braille Chess Association – British Championship and Chairman’s Cup

The BCA recently held a tournament in the Marsham Court Hotel from Sunday 19th June to Saturday 25th June.  24 players, most of them visually impaired, participated.  During the week, 7 rounds of chess were played and in the evenings the group enjoyed entertainment such as a quiz, some music and a murder mystery.

The tournament and entertainments were organised by John Jenkins of Highcliffe (pictured top) and he took part in the chess along with local Steve Bailey of Poole (pictured below).

21 other players travelled to Bournemouth from around the UK and were joined by a player from Vienna, Austria.  Ian Clark and Richard Ursell provided coaching and Martin Simons gave a challenge in a 10 board simultaneous, finishing on 9.5 points.

Stan Lovell (Scarborough) won the BCA British Championship on tie break with 5.5 points and Richard Murphy (Macclesfield) won the Chairman’s Cup.

We are looking forward to returning to Bournemouth next summer.
