A Philip Ursell win… in a Hungarian Chess Magazine!

Magazine article

As reported in Bulletin No.8 back in 2020, four generations of Ursell’s have played chess in the local area.  The first and (so far) strongest was Philip Ashby Ursell who was born in 1902 and was still graded 176 when aged 75 years old, having been appreciably stronger in his younger days!  Philip was the uncle of Richard Ursell’s father.

Richard discovered one of Philip’s games annotated in a cutting from a Hungarian publication, most likely Magyar Sakkvilág (Hungarian Chess World). The game appears to be from the Major Section of the very strong 1932-33 Hastings Congress and is a fine tactical win.

We have had a crack at translating the article into English.  We have added a note to the end of the 14.Rxf2 sideline but otherwise we have left the commentary untouched.  Thanks to Richard for sending this in and we hope you enjoy the entertaining game!
